Alfa Chemistry Introduced Ionic Liquids Products to Assist Chemical Research

October 24 18:15 2018

On October 23, 2018, Alfa Chemistry, a leading chemical company in New York, announced the launch of ionic liquids products for expanding their production lines and assisting chemical researches of their customers.

An ionic liquid is a salt in the liquid state, which is composed entirely of ions but the ions are poorly coordinated, resulting in that most ionic liquids exhibit low vapor pressure even at room temperature. Typical properties of ionic liquids include high thermal stability, low flammability, electrical conductivity, and the ability to solvate various organic and inorganic compounds. Most importantly, ionic liquids can be recycled, which has inspired a lot of researches on ionic liquids in green applications.

A wide range of ionic liquids are provided by Alfa Chemistry, including:

Ammonium ionic liquid: The ammonium ionic liquid is a compound in which a hydrogen atom in the ammonium ion is substituted by an alkyl group. The ammonium ionic liquid has a formula of R4NX. The four alkyl groups could be the same or different groups. Ammonium ionic liquids could be applied as catalysts and environmentally friendly solvents in many reactions. They can also be used as functional additives for polymer chains or hybrid materials. For example, poly(ionic liquids) prepared with ammonium ionic liquids can be used for CO2 adsorption.

Functionalized ionic liquidsFunctionalized ionic liquids are ionic liquids containing specific functional groups such as hydroxyl, amine, sulfonate, nitrile, ether, benzyl, carboxyl, ester, decyl, alkenyl, phosphate, and the like. The preparation of functionalized ionic liquids is typically accomplished by introducing functional groups into the cation. For example, in order to increase the lubricating ability of the ionic liquid, a phosphate group can be introduced into the imidazolium cation. The resulting functionalized ionic liquids generally have better friction reducing capabilities than conventional imidazolium hexafluorophosphates, suggesting that phosphate functionalized ionic liquids may be promising candidates for new high temperature liquid lubricants.

Imidazolium ionic liquid: The imidazole ring is a versatile ionic liquid scaffold. Imidazole-based ionic liquids have properties such as adjustable structure, thermal stability, relatively high ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical window. Imidazolium ionic liquids are generally classified into four categories, include monosubstituted, disubstituted, trisubstituted and benzimidazole ionic liquids.

Morpholinium ionic liquidsMorpholine ionic liquids are a class of compounds having a morpholine ring. In general, the morpholine in the compound contains two R groups on the N atom, and changes in the group can impart different functions and properties to the ionic liquid. The morpholine ionic liquid can be used as a solvent in an organic reaction to obtain higher yield and better selectivity. And using morpholine ionic liquids is a more effective and green way to prepare metal and non-metal nanomaterials.

Phosphonium ionic liquids: The phosphonium ionic liquid is an ionic liquid having the general formula [PR4] + and it has four substituents on the phosphonium cation. The variations in substituents and available anions represents a large number of possible salts. Phosphine ionic liquids have high electrochemical stability, so that they have great promise as an alternative to solvent/electrolyte combinations. Phosphonium ionic liquid also could be used as a solvent in many important reactions including Heck cross-coupling reaction, Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, Diels–Alder reaction and so on.

Piperidine ionic liquid: The piperidine ionic liquid is a compound containing piperidine ions. Piperidine ionic liquids are of considerable interest due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, low volatility and low flammability. One of the most important applications of piperidine ionic liquids is their use in electrolyte systems.

Pyridine ionic liquids: The pyridinium-based ionic liquid is an ionic liquid containing a pyridinium cation. Its stability, reactivity and catalysis in organic synthesis make them widely available. Pyridine ionic liquids can be used in Diels-Alder reactions, Friedel-Crafts reactions, Suzuki reactions, Grignard reactions and so on.

Pyrrolidine ionic liquid: The pyrrolidine ionic liquid is an ionic liquid containing a pyrrolidinium cation. The anions in the pyrrolidine ionic liquid could be NO3- , HSO4- , CH3COO- and other acid ions. Pyrrolidine ionic liquids have good electrochemical properties, so they can be widely used as polymer electrolytes. And they can also be applied as solvents in organic chemistry.

“Because of their unique properties, ionic liquids can be widely used in many fields of chemical researches. And they are expected to be a substitute for traditional organic solvents, and they are believed to open up a new field of research for the future of chemistry, electrochemistry, biology, physics, materials science and medicine. That’s why we decided to introduce ionic liquids products.” Said Brenda Randy, the marketing Manager of Alfa Chemistry.
